History Repeats Itself

I am very sick of this election; I wish we could just fast forward to John McCain's inauguration. We all know it's going to happen.

But I've been reading Susan Faludi's Backlash, and the entire book is still horrifyingly relevant, seventeen years after its publication, and this section in particularly happened to be particularly apt, never mind what you think of Hillary Clinton or Geraldine Ferraro. You can predict the future by looking at the past.

Are they saying "boo" or "boo-urns"?

This is the funniest thing I saw today: Bush getting booed, and very loudly. You know, funny until it made me sad.

George W. Bush is one of the most despised people in this country, and I have faith he will go down as one of the worst Presidents in history - if not the worst. What's his approval rating now? Last time I heard, a month or so ago, maybe, it had dwindled down to 17%. And every time, I wonder, what idiots are giving him any approval? The rich (the greedy ones, that is) and the stupid/ignorant. There's no other reason to support this man (who acts more like a child).

The media continues to go easy on him, even now, after his lies have cost so many people their lives, and we all hold onto the illusion that we ought to treat him with an ounce of respect or speak of him in polite terms. No. George Bush is horrible human being. He is a moron. He is unqualified, spoiled, and incompetent. I would spit on him.

So, the sad part of this all is that, I honestly believe Americans would overwhelmingly support his impeachment, but it will never happen because our supposed "representatives" are cowards and criminals themselves, with very, very few exceptions. They care more about raising their pay than actually upholding the Constitution or answering to us, the voters. They don't want to do their jobs; they want to be celebrities. And to keep their power, they follow the popular opinion - not that of the voters, no, but of other politicians and small fringe groups, no matter how out of touch it is with society.

And this is what is driving me crazy about this year's election - maybe part of it is that I actually have to cast a vote this time. Clinton, Obama, and McCain are more of the same. Disagree all you want, but they are the only ones the media approved of - they love McCain and they love the Clinton and Obama "battle." None of the other Democrat candidates received much attention, and Kucinich, as usual, got zero respect. The candidates most Americans would honestly want as President get buried early on in these races and by November, the media and the screwy two-party system offers us only "meh" and "oh god, please, no." (At least I can take joy in the Republicans not loving their candidate this year, either.)

The biggest problem in this country, when it comes to nearly every issue, is how the media gives a wildly inaccurate view on, well, everything. The viewers take it for truth, or fight against it initially only to give in, and so if it's said in the media long and loud enough, it becomes fact: McCain is a centrist, Hillary Clinton is evil, Obama is a Muslim (of course, implying, Muslims are Bad Evil Terrorists). Real news, easily found on the Internet, gets buried only to finally surface two to three years after the fact (see: voting machines). The media gives credence to crazies who want the next generation to be sexually ignorant, to teach religion in science classes, and undo any progress we've had on social issues. But the worst part is that it can't be disassembled.

There's a good chance McCain will end up the next President, thanks to the media fawning over him and refusing to report his gaffs. But, ironically, Bush's campaign may have had it right, and McCain is not right in the head. At the very least, he is a misogynist: McCain previously supported the legality of abortion, fully aware of what would happen if it became illegal (and what had happened when it was), but now he's radically reversed his position, saying Roe v. Wade should be overturned. In other words, he knows women (and the unborn babies, can't forget them!) will be injured and die in great numbers, but he doesn't care. Obviously, they should have kept their damn whore legs closed, right? Misogyny.

But the media will keep saying we love him and that he's a centrist and a good man until we give in and start believing it.

Imagine what would happen if we collectively resisted.

The C Word

YES. Exactly. Regardless of whether one likes Hillary Clinton or not. Sheesh. Sexism remains strong.

I filled out my voter registration form, and just need to mail it out. Soon I shall be a registered Democrat. Yes, I'll vote Clinton in our primary, whether it'll change anything or not. Whoever gets the Democratic nomination gets my vote in the general election.
