The Next Morning
The day before the election, I saw a photoshopped image of the Obamas that said "President Barack Obama and the First Family," and I'll admit, I got a little thrill seeing that. I stayed up last night until I knew who won, and got up this morning and a watched a few minutes of people celebrating.

But I just can't ride a buzz from this, knowing it appears Prop 8 is going to pass in California, along with discriminatory measures in other states (bans on same-sex marriage and bans on gays adopting). I just thought, this is probably the essence of an Obama presidency. No, Obama didn't vote on these measures, but people who voted for him did, and I expect the same feeling of disappointment for his entire term.

Like I always say, I'd be glad if he proved me wrong, but I really doubt it. I expect Obama to be someone for America to point to and claim progress, to cover up for our assbackwardness in, oh, everything.

(Nearly) my whole campus was celebrating last night. Everyone was really happy/hopeful/*insert optimistic word here* and it was a really great environment.

Instead of logging into facebook (or...writing the paper I was supposed to be writing) when I turned on my computer this morning, I went o see what was going on with Prop 8 and it was a total buzzkill for me, too. I don't see how you can give someone equal rights (not that discrimination magically vanished for how ever many months) and then take them away. I don't see how a voter could support something like that unless they were able to ignore the fact that it was affecting actual people, nor do I see why they felt the need to vote for something that has no effect on many of them when California clearly hasn't exploded/been flooded/turned into pillars of salt since the supreme court decision. I don't understand people sometimes. Sad.

Ha, so I just got back from a GSA meeting at my school so it's been on my mind. I'd like you thank your journal for giving me a space to rant. Maybe it should be on my journal instead. :-P

Let's see how long I can make this comment...

Anyways, I'm so far excited to see how Obama does. I can't see myself getting as outright angry at him as I have at the current administration...maybe just disillusioned if things don't work out. And I'm liking Joe Biden more and more, so...

Anyways, in the world of non-politics, how are you?

Yeah, that's enough. Hopefully insane journal doesn't have character limits on comments.

Ah, everyone needs a good old-fashioned rant!

I was really surprised how much the Prop 8 thing upset me, I actually cried a bit. But I was glad to find out the text of it says nothing about couples already married, and there's fifty million ways it can get challenged in the California Supreme Court. So here's hoping.

I'll probably never really come to like Obama (though I love his snark; it provided me with many LOLs during this election), but the reason I'm particularly ambivalent is because of fellow Americans. There's this freaky worship of Obama going around, that I think a lot of people would follow him off a cliff...so his presidency has potential to just as much damage as, if not more than, Bush's.

Random aside: I hope the Michelle Obama-handlers go away, and she gets all snarky and bitchy again. Because then she'll be my favorite person ever.

Politics aside...life's going fine. Still haven't made any friends here, but I joined a literary magazine for foreign languages. I'm in the middle of something quite ironic and vaguely awkward...(I just realized I didn't friend you back, but I did just now, so you can see that entry and point and laugh at me.) But overall, I'm still way happier than I ever was in high school. Or middle school.
